Vietnam’s Vietnam?
This issue of Kampuchea: Vietnam’s Vietnam by Laura Summers critically examines Vietnam’s 1979 invasion and occupation of Democratic Kampuchea, revealing its devastating effects on the Kampuchean people. It details how over 500,000 perished from famine caused by forced resettlements and military aggression, while nearly a million sought refuge near the Thai border for survival. The text exposes Vietnam’s economic motives, rooted in historical imperialist ambitions, and the resistance led by Democratic Kampuchea, which continued despite over 200,000 Vietnamese troops occupying the country. As Vietnam struggles with its own economic decline, this work highlights how the invasion serves regional hegemony rather than genuine liberation, reinforcing the necessity of Kampuchean self-determination.
